B: Geoff's Loft

Kinetic teaching and delightful commissions in wood

Geoff is originally from the North East coast of America where he spent his childhood building tree-houses and sailing boats. One of Geoff’s earliest memories of his obsession with making things is of pulling up attic floorboards to make his mother a Christmas present. She nearly fell through the ceiling, but all was forgiven when he presented her with a beautiful pine chest of drawers, which she still uses to this day.

His choice of materials remains unconventional. For Geoff, a piano key might be turned into part of the mechanism of a clock, a galvanized bucket into the body of an instrument, bamboo and string into a boat or plane, an object that will actually float or fly.

Geoff is equally interested in the unexpected sounds inherent in the materials around us and uses his unique instruments as a musician and sound artist.

As a kinetic teacher, Geoff passes on his enthusiasm for the maths and science in the surrounding natural world. Through hands-on creative designing and making, he engages the next generation.

H: Katja's Cakes

Extraordinary Buttercream Cakes

Katja Seaton studied at Camberwell School of Art and then went on to do a 3-year apprenticeship at The Cupcake Café, then based in Hell’s Kitchen, Manhattan. Whilst there she decorated cakes for Oprah Winfrey, Madonna, President Clinton and Jennifer Lopez.

“My first cake was for Linda Evangelista, the Cupcake was an exciting place to work, we would think nothing of Susan Sarandon sitting in the tiny café out front having a coffee and cupcake.  Everyone was treated the same, so you would have people like John F Kennedy Junior queueing alongside you waiting for his order”

During her time in New York, Katja also attended art classes at The Art Students League and Columbia University.

Upon returning to the UK, Katja learnt to bake alongside a Michelin starred Chef.

Katja has only recently joined the community at Britannia Yard. And having been working in cake and buttercream for 20 years, as well as teaching art and design. Katja is now doing an MA in textile design at Brighton University, where she is applying her knowledge of piping to a new medium.
